About the place

The old town church, recorded from 1332, turned Calvinist around 1560 and was pulled down in 1899–1907 as it was too decayed. The new church followed a design by architect József Dobovszky, who won a competition in 1906, and was consecrated on 23 October 1910.

It is built of brick in Neo-Romanesque style, with the bell tower in the main front and a roof of coloured glazed tiles. Fragments of the old church are set into the walls, and the choir holds the tombstones of Sándor András Tordai and Zsófia Sulyok, with the Szapolyai and Jagiellon arms.

Good to know

  • The church is in use; go in outside services and keep quiet.
  • Combine it with Unirii Square, the town hall and the Trajan statue a few steps away.
  • Look at the glazed-tile roof from the street side.
